Buying Dog Clothes
We all love our canine friends and we also love to buy many things to pamper our dogs. One of many dog accessories that has become more popular over the years is dog clothing. Dog clothing went from a niche market, to a more acceptable position in recent years and there are many brands of dog clothes to choose from now.
Nay Sayers
There are however still many people who ridicule or advocate against dog clothing. So let's set some things straight:
- "A dog has fur so they do not need dog clothing." In fact, in many places during winter it can become so cold that many breeds (especially the smaller ones) require some sort of protection. A thick dog coat or dog sweater will really help. Put on some dog shoes to protect the dog's feet from frostbite and salt too!
- "You are hurting the animal!" If a dog is hurt it will let you know. Dog clothing designers will design the clothes in such a way that it won't cause the dog any discomfort and so that that the dog can move around freely. Some dogs will need getting used to the idea of clothing and positive reinforcement (treats) are reccommended during the first times. Should your dog still show awkward behavior when wearing clothing after a couple tries, then maybe it is time to find a different size. Some dogs will refuse to wear clothing, please respect your dog's wishes and do not force it to wear clothing unless absolutely necessary.
Sizing
To ensure a correct fit it is important to measure the dog's sizes. Always check out the size chart and instructions when buying a new brand. Dog clothing sizes are not uniform and one brands Small can be another brands Medium. If the dog's measurement falls between two sizes, it is recommend choosing the larger size.
- Neck measurements, also known as collar measurements should leave 1-2 cm of space between the neck and the measurement tape to avoid chocking.
- Chest measurements are taken behind the front legs and should leave 2-3 cm extra to ensure a comfy fit.
- Length measurements are taken from the base of the neck till the base of the tail. You have to make sure the dog is standing on a straight surface and in an upright position when measuring.
Quality
Just as with any other purchase, try to read some reviews of the product and/or company. Do they deliver what they promise? Many dog clothes brands use very cheap fabric, don't be fooled by low priced items still promosing high quality. Unless there is a clearance sale of course, then by all means shop till you drop!

Can you afford huge Vet bills, should you be allowed to own a pet is you can't?
I'm a single mom with a dog and a cat. Sometimes I may not be able to afford the Vet bills. My pets are loved, fed well and have a warm place to sleep. We love our pets just the same (probably even more) as people that have money falling out of their pockets.
I'm so sick of hearing people say that people shouldn't have pets if they can't afford them. These are the same people that spend thousands every year on useless pet grooming, breeding, training, pet clothing, dog houses that the dog will never go in. These people have probably never had to struggle for a buck in their lives. How many thousands have they spent on full breeds while thousands of mutts were put to sleep? How sad is that?
Put your money where your mouth is and help out a pet that may not be fortunate enough to live a life of luxury.
I was asked: Just out of curiosity, how would you deal with a sick animal? I know exactly what I would do. About 2 weeks after I "purchased" my dog from an animal rescue she passed out and I had to rush her to the hospital. She had parvo-virus, she must have transmitted it at the animal rescue or something. The Vet hospital worked out a payment plan for her. Somehow, she survived after getting an IV, antibiotics and chicken and rice soup diet. The Vet didn't think she would. Kind of a miracle that she survived actually. I didn't have the money to save her, I had her for 2 weeks, but I managed to come up with it. Well, anyways maybe my question did have an angry tone towards "rich" people. Not really, it was towards people in general that believe low income people (or middle class for that matter) should not own pets. That pisses me off to no end! What really pist me off is someone suggesting that I don't care for my pets properly because I am not rich. The nerve of some people :)
