Russian Dog Breeds
The Hound Group includes dog breeds with a wonderful sense of smell and/or great athleticism. These breeds were developed to follow game either by sight or by smell. Sighthounds include the fast and streamlined Afghans.
Russian Blues have striking green eyes and an expression that makes it look as if they are always smiling. They have a solid slivery blue coat that is short and thick and feels silky. In fact, it is this legendary silkiness that caused Russian Blues to be hunted for the fur at one point. Some Russian Blues are born with 'ghost stripes' that fade by adulthood.
Special Health Considerations
Most dog breeds have certain inherited health problems associated with that specific breed and the Black Russian Terrier is no exception.
She should visit the veterinarian several times in the first year for shots, boosters and check up. Then, as an adult, she should visit the veterinarian yearly for shots and check up. As she gets older, six years and on, she should visit the veterinarian twice a year for check ups and shots. Remember; avoid feeding your dog sweets.
Her teeth should be brushed at least twice a week with toothpaste and toothbrush designed for dogs. Brushing removes the accumulation of plaque and tartar which can cause cavities (rarely) and periodontal disease. Dog periodontal disease can lead to pain, loss of teeth, bad breath and other serious disease.

Dogs as a source of food and fur: Whilst Westerners have difficulty thinking of dogs (or wolves) as a source of meat, wolf fur is a highly prized commodity.
Hunting has likewise become central to their behavior patterns, even to their predilection for short bursts of intense exercise punctuating long periods of rest. Scratching behaviour seems enjoyable to the cat, and even declawed cats will go through elaborate scratching routines with every evidence of great satisfaction, despite the total lack of results.
The Pug, also called Mops or Carlin, is a toy breed that originated in China some where around 400 B.C. This small dog stands between 10 and 11 inches and weighs between 13 and 18 pounds.
The Komondor is a Hungarian breed that was used to guard sheep flocks from predators. This breed can be traced back to at least 1555. It most likely descended from Russian herding dogs. Today this exotic looking dog is used mostly as a working dog.
The Norwegian Elkhound, also called the Elkhound or the Norsk Elghund, is a Norwegian breed that was probably developed by the Vikings. They belong to the hound group and they were originally used as watchdogs and guard dogs. They were also used to hunt large game animals like bears and elk. Today this 6000 year old breed is used as a pet.
The Miniature Pinscher, also called the Reh Pinscher, the Zwergpinscher, and the Mini Pin, is a German breed. They belong to the toy group and it is suspected that they descended from a crossing of the German Pinscher, the Dachshund, and the Italian Greyhound.
